Summary


Students will assist the owner of rental property in re-flooring selected areas in a rental house. Students will need to find different flooring options and state the cost for each including installation as linear equations. This project requires students to use surface area formulas, scale drawings, proportions, and linear equations.


CCSS Alignment for Grades 6-9


  • 6.G.1: Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems. Students find area of floor plan for rental property.

  • 7.NS.3: Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving the four operations with rational numbers. Students will use all four operations in calculating costs and amount of materials for re-flooring project.

  • 8.EE.7: Solve linear equations in one variable. Students will use linear equations to solve for installation costs.

  • G-MG.3. Apply geometric methods to solve design problems. Students will calculate multiple surface areas of floors to provide best re-flooring option for project needs.
