“In a real-world scenario, students will explore and utilize the Pythagorean Theorem in construction. They will perform computations using squares and square roots and demonstrate an understanding of rational and irrational numbers. They will also explore the impact of these ideas on large numbers through the use of powers and scientific notation.”

CCSS Alignment with Grade 8

  • 8.NS.1: Know that numbers that are not rational are called irrational. Understand informally that every number has a decimal expansion; for rational numbers show that the decimal expansion repeats eventually, and convert a decimal expansion which repeats eventually into a rational number. Students will identify rational and irrational numbers and convert a repeating decimal expansion into a rational number, using this knowledge to design a “lean-to” shelter.
